A Mini-Series on Conquering Self-Sabotage for Small Business Owners - Part 2

Hey there, small business heroes! Welcome back to our mini-series on overcoming self-sabotage. In Part 1, we delved into the first three behaviors that might be holding you back. (click here to review Procrastination, Comfort Zone Conundrum and Comparison-itis Crisis)

Today, we're ready to tackle the next set, so grab your favorite beverage, kick back, and let's dive in.

Limited Emotional Processing Skills

Running a small business is a rollercoaster of emotions, from the exhilarating highs of success to the challenging lows of setbacks. If you are only able to process the highs (half of the rollercoaster of emotions), your growth will be stunted. You may find yourself avoiding uncomfortable and frustrating situations because you simply do not have the tools to deal with them. In small business, risk is not an option. Some of the risk could be the very ones that will change your life for the better.

Resolution:

It's time to upgrade those emotional processing skills! Start by acknowledging your emotions, whether it's frustration, fear, or even excitement. Journaling, talking to a mentor, or seeking professional help are excellent ways to develop a healthier emotional toolkit. Remember, embracing your feelings is a superpower, not a weakness.

Justification

Ever catch yourself making excuses or rationalizing less-than-stellar decisions? You're not alone. Justification is a sneaky form of self-sabotage that can keep your business from reaching its full potential. Here is why? You begin to treat those excuses the same way you treat measurable outcomes. You are using them to make yourself feel better for the moment as a replacement for the accomplishment itself.

Resolution:

Hold yourself accountable, but do it with compassion. Start measuring all that you do accomplish or have accomplished. Do one productive thing each day, remembering what is truly productive, staying away from “busy”. Instead of justifying mistakes, use them as learning opportunities. Embrace a growth mindset and view setbacks as stepping stones to success. Your ability to own up to your actions is the secret sauce to business resilience and growth. It is not about all the great ideas you had for your business but whether or not you took action on the idea.

Resistance

Change is the only constant in the business world, but resistance to it can be a formidable roadblock. Whether it's resisting new technologies, strategies, or simply refusing to delegate tasks, resistance is a self-sabotaging behavior that can hinder progress. Another kicker…we often feel resistance when things are actually going “right” in our lives, not what’s going wrong. Sit with that thought for a minute.

Resolution:

Step out of your comfort zone! Embrace change as an inevitable and exciting part of your entrepreneurial journey. Start small, experiment with new approaches, and surround yourself with a supportive network that encourages innovation. Resistance is different from procrastination. We have to get clear on what we want as well as when and why we want it. We get to take the time to step back and regroup, be aware of the feelings by naming it. Only then can you step back into work feeling inspired. Remember, progress happens just outside your comfort zone.

Congratulations, small business rockstar! You've identified the next three self-sabotaging behaviors, and now it's time to take action. Don't let limited emotional processing skills, justification, or resistance hold you back any longer. It's time to unleash the full potential of your business.
